The #1 Bodybuilding Rule I Broke to TAKE MY PHYSIQUE TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Before you read this, I highly recommend that you read The #1 Rule for Long-Term Bodybuilding Success because that will provide a lot of context as to how I think about bodybuilding.
To recap, bodybuilding is truly about embracing what I like to call a tinkering mindset where you take full responsibility of your progress and make adjustments when needed.
Make no mistake about it.
You must make adjustments in your training and diet. It is inevitable. You’re going to need to make adjustments just for the purposes of shocking the muscle in to new growth.
But even beyond that, as you grow, your body is going to require different movements due to changes in your structure.
Also… you will naturally gravitate towards new movements as you develop a better mind-muscle connection. Movements that you previously did not “feel” will eventually give you an incredible pump.
That being said for some reason, people seem to paint themselves into a corner when it comes to their own bodybuilding/fitness journey.
That natural inclination is to follow all these rules.
The # 1 Rule Bodybuilding Rule I Broke to Take My Physique to the Next Level
You must:
- do 3-4 sets
- start the week off with Chest Day
- do Bench Press
I could list a ton of these little rules we are conditioned to follow in the gym.
Another one of those rules that we just follow is the following:
“When you do an exercise, you move on and do other exercises. You don’t do that exercise again.”
Says who…
During Summer 2011, I broke that rule into a million little pieces. That was the summer I took my physique to the next level, especially my chest.
My chest was always a weakness for me, in particular, my “upper” chest.
One thing I did that really helped was to double up on certain exercises during my training sessions for chest.
So I might do something like heavy incline DB presses early on in the working. Then do some more exercises. And then revisit the incline DB presses later on in the workout. Obviously, I would not be able to do as much weight so I would use less weight and just do higher reps (like 25-30 range).
But breaking that rule made a huge difference and it can do the same for you and whatever body part you want to bring up.
Embrace the tinkering mindset fellas and you will find that there are no limits.

Hey Sonny
I just wanted to ask whats your opinion on the amount of weight
I know overtraining is often simply an excuse, but whenever i lift heavy i experience symptoms of “overtraining” – i think im doing well but no gains or progress is made
Ive recently lowered the weight significantly and have made better progress / gains using lighter weight
Do yoy believe using lighter weights is important in the beginning?
I believe that you need to find the perfect sweet spot of HEAVY BUT MANAGEABLE.
You want it heavy enough where it is providing adequate resistance but not at the expense of sacrificing too much form.
Hey Sonny,
Haven’t talked to you in a while, tried hitting you up on holidays but never heard back so maybe your number changed. Hope you’re doing well.
Anyway I have an unrelated question to this post. I’ve recently matched with a really hot married woman (no kids) on tinder. She wants some fun on the side because her husband travels almost 3 weeks a month. Apparently she’s done this before for over a year with somebody else.
Really wanting to do it, but not sure if I can be this scummy or if I’d be worried about the husband. My dad was cheated on by his first wife so that’s something in the back of my head too.
I know we haven’t talked in a while but I’d appreciate any advice you can give me on this. Hope Tyrants & Tellers is doing well and I look forward to checking out Instagods.
Hey Bryce. Good to hear from you. As for you’re question, I can’t really answer that for you. Only you can make that decision.
However, the fact that you wrote to me asking me this should tell you something… Your gut is telling you NOT to do it for ethical reasons. I would listen to it.
