You Need Some High-Quality “Me Time”

Relax kid… Go to a “chill place” to figure it out.

What’s good fellas? I’m back in good old Austin, Texas after a brief weekend getaway in Las Vegas. It was a great time as usual. But now it’s back to business.

The period of time immediately following a Vegas trip is always laid back and chill. I’m partied out. It’s a time for me to catch up on sleep and recharge. It’s a time for me to get back on track and refocus on my priorities.

As soon as I got back home and dropped off my bags, I did what I do every week… I took some high-quality “me time” and went to my “chill place.”

Nothing like some beef ribs and brisket at The Blue OX BBQ for some high quality "me time"

My chill place is a food truck on the east side of town called The Blue Ox BBQ. It’s tucked away behind a wooden fence next to a small bar. The floor is made of dirt. Not many people know about it… and that’s what I like about it. It’s my secret spot… my “chill place.”

I go here once a week to take a break from everyone and everything I have going on in my life. I go here to do absolutely nothing. I don’t think about work. I don’t think about girls. I don’t think about my friends or family.

I go here to enjoy some good barbeque food, listen to some country music, and most importantly, be alone with my thoughts. I think about Strength By Sonny a lot here… future articles I want to write about, the overall direction of the site, the image that is being created… you name it.

In a way, The Blue Ox is where I hold my weekly business meeting with myself. There are no distractions. My phone is shut off. I think a lot about the future. Who I am… Who I want to become… It will all be tied into Strength By Sonny.

Everyone Needs “Me Time” in a “Chill Place”

There’s too much going on. You need to take time every now and then to unplug. You need to kick it old school once in a while by completely shutting yourself off from the virtual world. That’s what “me time” is for.

It’s a time for you to achieve mental clarity by being alone with your thoughts. It’s a time for you to focus on what’s important. You can use this time to completely forget about your problems. It’s not good to let your problems eat away at you 24/7. You could also potentially focus on your problems and try to come up with the best solution. The choice is yours.

Your “Chill Place” should be a secret spot.

Secrets are sexy. They’re so pure because they are unpolluted by the biased opinions of others. They are free of judgment because nobody knows about them. That’s what you should experience when you go to your chill place… a sense of freedom.

No one knows where you are. The only people who would are the other strangers at that particular location… and you’re just another face to them.

You guys are the only ones that know about my chill place. No one close to me knows about it. Anytime I go there, there’s usually the same old man with his dog sitting in the back. That’s it.

It is a time for you to be completely SELFISH.

It’s called “me time” for a reason. It’s YOUR time to take a break from it all. It’s YOUR time to reflect on YOU. It’s YOUR time to figure out why life isn’t going as planned. It’s YOUR time to plan out your future and think about the man you want to be 10, 20, 30 years from now.

It’s a time for you to be completely alone and unreachable to those who know you. Everyone around you will try to give you their two cents and sway your line of thinking into taking action that will be most beneficial to them.

Your girlfriend can wait. Your friends can wait. Your parents can wait. It’s YOUR time after all. The world is not going to come crashing down if you take 1-2 hours every week where you go to a secret location to be alone to your thoughts.

In fact, the world may someday become a better place if use that time to make a plan and become a somebody who can make a difference…

How do you find a “Chill Place”?

I think there are two ways to go about it. The first way is to just choose a location where you can be alone (not in your house). It should be a place where you feel at peace and can think clearly.

It also should not be in a “noisy location.” Nothing kills concentration and a “chill” environment like blaring car horns and mobs of people yapping away on their smartphones.

It should be a simple, quite place…. somewhere you can just relax and “hear” the world. The world is a beautiful place. Most people never realize it because of the clutter. If you take the time to listen, you will know what I am talking about.

The second way (the way I experienced) is to let your chill place choose you. To have a chance at experiencing this, you absolutely need to spend as much time as possible out of the house.

Everyone has a special place that they can go to be alone with their thoughts. Only you can experience that feeling when you find a place for the first time that feels “just right.” If (when) you do, you should hold on to it… because that’s your place.

You will know when your chill place has found you because you will feel it. That little voice in your head will tell you: “This is me.” “I can think clearly here.” “I feel at peace here.”

Nature is pretty great for this. I got a spot in the woods about 5 minutes away, right by a lake. Nothing like fresh air to clear up the mind.

    Great article!

It’s important to take time out of a busy life to reflect and plan, set goals, get off the wrong track and take the positive steps in life.

Nice advice Sonny, you are right. I need some time off.
It is completely true, you have to find places to do different stuff. For example, if you want to study you just cant use any table or any room, like the places where you sleep, eat, or do manual work. Maybe its a stupid example, but the point is that some places are good for some things and you have to find the best for every thing you need to do (feng shui is about this).

Anyway, I’m commenting because I’d like to ask you something. Can you write more about greasing the wheels? I’m interested in becoming better with persons. I want to be a better talker, more charming, get things, etc.
I’m not a natural speaker of english. In spanish, my language, there is no close term that refers to prepare the terrain so you can get something by talking. That’s why it was something completely new for me (as a tactic and not something natural in people).

I think I applied it last time, and I passed my exam. I talked about the world cup, and somehow it worked.

I would like to become more than good at this. How can I learn? A friend advised me to do a oratory course. But that is different, its about becoming good at speaking to a listening audience.

Haha thanks for this comment. Back in college I had my spot to get all my work done. It was a little wall with a table lined up against it on the 7th floor… no one knew about it. That was my spot especially during finals week.

Yea man I will definitely be covering this topic in greater detail… I would not recommend a course though because this type of thing really requires you to shut of the logical part of your brain and just flow with people.

I would recommend something fun like an acting (or improve class). It will require you to think on your feet and will help you conquer your fear of getting up in front of a lot of people. best advice I can give for now is to just get as much experience talking with people as possible and learn to love starting conversations (small talk with people).
