Markus Reinhardt Trains Strength By Sonny

This is an exciting post because it’s really comprised of 2 parts.

The first part pertains to Markus and I continuing our discussion on HIT training.

The second part contains the recorded videos from a leg workout I did with Markus at his gym.

This was a great experience for me because this is the most intense leg workout I have ever experienced.

It only lasted about 40-50 minutes but we got a lot of work done in the time period.

I am glad we got it on tape because you guys can see some more actual workout footage of me in the gym where I’m really struggling. Markus really pushes me and I reach failure multiple times.

He also provides great commentary explaining what exactly is going on as we work.

To top it off we also shot some videos where he addresses some topics on bodybuilding in general.

In our follow up podcast with Markus Reinhardt, we continue our discussion on high intensity training.

More specifically, how would Markus apply his training principles to me?

We focus on the following:

  • Sonny discusses his bodybuilding background
  • How much volume do you really need?
  • In reality, high intensity and high volume cannot coexist.
  • The effects of HIT training on the Central Nervous System (CNS)
  • The importance of using a workout chart (tracking your progress)
  • How much time should you actually spend in the gym?
  • What is correct form for HIT Training?
  • According to Markus, machines are better than free weights?!!! Why is this?
  • You have to find what works for you. Remember the #1 rule.
  • What is the science behind overtraining?

Now for the fun part.

The following videos show Markus Reinhardt training me on leg day.

As you can see from the videos, I was definitely out of my element:

1. It was the first time I trained without listening to music in nearly a decade.

2. Markus really knew how and when to push me.

In this video, Markus talks about how he is going to apply the principles of HIT training to our session.

In this video, I ask Markus for his honest thoughts on the use of knee wraps.

Here you see Markus put me through our first all out set for quads.

Before our second set, Markus explains the proper form for Smith Machine Squats.

Here we do our final all out set for quads. I’m usually manhandling 4-5 plates on barbell squats. With Markus, I can barely handle 2 plates on the Smith Machine Squat.

Markus explains negative training and the use of “negatives” to break through plateaus.

It only took 1 set to completely fry my hamstrings.

Markus explains calf training.

In this last video, Markus and I discuss numerous topics including how to track your workouts, why machines are better than free weights, and how beginners can start implementing HIT training.
