Define Yourself with Music

I love music. I listen to it all the time. I listen to it when I drive to work. I listen to it when I’m killin the weights at the gym. I’m listening to it right now. In case you are wondering, right now I’m listening to “Who Do You Love?” by YG featuring Drake. It’s got some pound to it. Both of these dudes absolutely murder the track.

I can honestly say that I would be lost without music. It has such a profound impact on my enjoyment of life. Without it, life would be boring. I would be just a walking drone with no pep in my step, no killer vibe, and most importantly, no swag.

The music we listen to greatly influences who we are. It’s another form of entertainment that were are influenced by, just like the television we watch. Most importantly, music enables us to achieve a better understanding of ourselves.

When you take a step back and actually look at the music that you listen to, you’ll be surprised at just how much this reveals about who you are. So you should do that. Define yourself with music. Go through your playlist and really take a look at the songs you listen to most frequently. Ask yourself why this is. Ask yourself why you keep playing certain songs over and over again. What songs inspire you to strive for greatness? What’s songs get you pumped up to go to the gym? What songs get you in the mood to go out and silk some broads? What songs give you the confidence to do whatever you want? What songs give you the strength to get through your down times and make you feel that somehow some way…. everything is going to be alright? Ask yourself those questions.

You will be surprised at how helpful this is and also at how much fun you can have with this. Now it’s important to realize that this is not some end all be all solve every single problem in your life trick for total self-improvement. Doing this exercise will not instantly make you cooler. It will not instantly make you more attractive to women. It will not instantly make you a more social person. That is not what self-improvement is about. That is not how we approach it on this site. If you want quick fixes for every problem in life… you might as well start looking for another team to join. To avoid any further confusion, let’s briefly define SELF-IMPROVEMENT.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT (according to Sonny)-

Self-improvement is about working on various aspects of your life to make yourself the best possible version of yourself. It’s all about UNDERSTANDING… understanding what works for you and what does not work for you. We all have problems or things we want to work on. We all have questions. We all want answers. Self-improvement is about becoming informed and actually going through the process of trial and error to find out WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU.

It’s an ongoing process. There is no end. The ultimate measure of success is that over time, you can actually look yourself in the mirror and ask the question, “Who are you?”…. you are on the right track when your answer becomes a story and that story motivates you to become a legend when it’s all said and done.

That’s deep. I kind of went off topic but that’s how I feel at least. But my main point is that all this stuff is about understanding yourself. Your main goal is to become the best version of yourself as possible. The only way to truly have a chance at doing this is by understanding yourself to the best of your ability. So when I mention something like going through your playlist to study the songs you listen to, it’s important because it’s one more thing you can add into your arsenal. It’s one more thing you can do to potentially understand yourself better. So in reality, it’s kind of a big deal.

Do this for me:

Go through your playlist and choose the 10 songs that best represent you. They can be positive or negative. Anything goes. Just make sure that each song represents you or relates to you somehow. If you’re brave enough, let me know in the comments below. I’ll go first.

The Thiller

Anything I do in life, I do my best to BRING IT. No hesitation. Just bring it. These songs represent that for me:

LL Cool J (feat. Method Man, Redman, Canibus, DMX) – 4,3,2,1

Cam’ron (feat. Jay-Z and Julez Santana) -Welcome to New York City

Three Days Grace – Animal I Have Become

The Killer

I’m not a quitter. I don’t just give up. I keeps it nasty… I’m from the old-school. The only way to stop me is to kill me… Good luck.

Eminem (feat. 50 Cent, 2pac, Nate Dogg) – Till I Collapse (Remix)

Skillet – Rebirthing

Skid Row – 18 And Life

My Darkest Days – Save Me

The Lover

Being smooth… silkin’ broads. I love it. That’s reflected in my overall swag and that swag is mainly due to the music I’ve listened to over the years.

LL Cool J – Imagine That

LL Cool J – Doin’ It

Tony! Toni! Toné! – Let’s Get Down

That’s my list. What’s yours?

Sonny

    Hey Sony.
I’m really digging the song Jesus of Suburbia and System of a Down lately. When I need inspiration I like to hear songs from 80’s fight movies, like On my own Alone and Moment of Truth.
    My favorite band is Bush.
My favorite song is Forsaken from Disturbed, since I live in Brazil no one cares if I listen to a guy saying “we walk among u feeding, rapin, must we hide from everyone?” very loud… not cool in the US I guess. Gonna check your songs.
I tought about what you said in the article and there are songs that put you down like Bruno Mars-when I was your man or anything from Simple Plan, I’ll make an effort to stay away from songs that make me feel weak, seems simple enough.

Yes, if you listen to music on a regular basis. The type of music you listen to will have an impact on you. Yea listen to ass-kicking music to kick ass in life.
Everyone has their preferences… I’m actually not a big fan of techno. I think a lot of it is girly. But that’s just my opinion.

Ok fine I’ll make a list. Songs that I feel represent me:

    1) Successful (Trey Songz ft. Drake) – Represents me working hard to be successful.

    2) Family Business (Kanye West) – Explains itself. Family is one of the most important things to me.

    3) Gin & Juice (Snoop Dogg) – This song just brings back a lot of good memories of when I was a young teen dreaming about the future years of being a young adult (which is now)!

    4) Soldier (Eminem) – Represents how I will persevere with things I need to do and not give up. No half-assed work! (Ok, maybe sometimes…)

    5) Like My Style (50 Cent) – Cos I’m fresh as a MF!

    6) Real (Kendrick Lamar) – I’m just now starting to become fully confident in my own skin, as I should be! I just didn’t realise that I needed to be real, not trying to be like some other cool dude I looked up to. It’s really paying off too.

    7) You Belong To Me (Trey Songz) – Probably the sexiest song I know. Represents the lover in me.

    8) U Should Roll (Trey Songz) – I don’t know exactly how to explain this one. But it’s another one for the lover in me (I have a LOT of those type of songs)!

    9) Simply Amazing (Trey Songz) – That feeling you have when you’re with the perfect girl.

    10) Loft Music (The Weeknd) – Not sure if this song represents anything about me. But whenever I listen to it I smile and zone out so I guess that says something…

BONUS 11) Lookin’ Ass Bitch (Trey Songz…again) – As much as I love females, some of them get on my fucking nerve and this freestyle/remix is perfect cos it’s exactly how I feel about some chicks and it’s coming from Trigga (who’s a role model/influential figure to me. 🙂

I liked the article, this was a cool idea too!

I already had thought about this, never focused on it though.
I believe music gives many emotions we need to experience, and so it fulfills our emotional needs, and talks about them.
I can say that I usually have some “periods” where I mostly listen to only some kind of music.

Lately I m listening to mostly Russian dance music, I don’t know the artist though. It makes me feel excited, and romantic/sexy. That’s probably indeed a need left unfulfilled for me. Good understanding. Also, it touches my passion for their strong culture, and mistery.

Before I listened to lot of metal, such as Isis (favourite band). Makes me feel excited, angry, aggressive, but somehow depressive. It reflects some nihilistic view of life that justfies me to be negative. Fuck that I m gonna stop listening to it.

    Indian music. Relaxes me.

Classical. Relaxes, but I sometimes listen to it for feeling cool/intellectual. I’ll use it to relax and stop pretending I am more intellectual than I am.

To sum it up. More romance, more emotion, more travels to the East, less negative attitude, less masturbating myself into being overly intellectual or melanconic.

Def… different music to utilize different emotions.

When I work out I listen to heavy metal/murder rap to get angry
When I’m driving I listen to rap/80s rock (especially on road trips)
When I’m silkin a chick I’ll play some 90s RNB
